Tips to Help Your Baby Sleep through Fireworks on the Fourth of July
Loud fireworks at 10 p.m. and a sleeping baby? How does that work??? ⠀⠀
I never thought about this until I myself so desperately wanted to go to sleep right around the time that the fireworks were starting! I wondered and worried if the loud firecrackers would wake my 4-month-old babe up from his sweet slumber.
The good news is that the first half of the night is the deepest and most restorative sleep for your baby and toddler meaning they are less likely to wake up!
Tips to Help Your Baby Sleep Through Fireworks
Here are a few things to help you prepare in case your baby or toddler does wake up this holiday weekend!
- WAIT before going into your baby/toddler’s room to see if they will fall back asleep on their own!
- If they don’t fall back asleep and your baby is awake but not overly upset, then try going into their room and shushing/patting/say goodnight to help them fall back asleep
- If going into the room makes your baby or toddler more upset you can offer reassurance over your baby monitor
- If your baby is crying and upset without any sign of falling back asleep, it’s ok to get them out of the crib and redo a mini bedtime routine to calm them down ⠀
- If you have a toddler or older child be sure to prepare them ahead of time. Tell them that they may hear some loud noises after they go to sleep and tell them about the fireworks. Your toddler understands much more than they might be able to say.
- Having this discussion for the first time prior to the middle of the night can be helpful!⠀
- If your baby is up more than usual overnight, then let them sleep in a bit! Keep wake-up time within 30 minutes of their usual wake up time to keep naps on track.
- If you’re planning to watch fireworks and stay up late let your baby take an extra nap or an extra long nap to help them stay up later than their usual bedtime
- Prioritize sleep a few days before the holiday weekend to help with the acute sleep debt from staying up later than usual for the fireworks show!
Tips to prepare for 4th of july weekend
- Protect your baby’s ears with headphones if you’re going to see fireworks or around loud noises throughout the day
- Squeeze in an extra nap if you are staying out past bedtime
- Bring a portable play yard for your baby or toddler to sleep for naps or bedtime if you are away from home
- Spend extra time winding your baby or toddler down if you have been at a family gathering or event
- Going out of town for the weekend? Sleep away from home is never the same! Do your best to mimic your sleep environment at home.
- Bring a sound machine and some Sleepout portable black-out shade (10% off code wellrested) or Slumberpod (5% off with Wellrested) to create the perfect dark sleep environment
I hope these tips help you enjoy the holiday weekend!
